The NewSpeak ABC was an experiment with various approaches. The initial idea was to create an image that changes depending on what type of light it gets looked at. I eventually achieved this effect by overlaying 2 bitmaps. Green and red were perfect for this experiment, they are complementary and therefore cover each other equally. I started off with a series of test images which i proceeded to screen print in order to scale them up. Then however I notice that this was lacking of concept so i sat down and thought about what i could do with this new technique i discovered. The result was the NewSpeak ABC. It plays on words which have been existing for a long time, but are now being replaced by products, brands or commodities. These two levels of this poster can be revealed if they are under red and green light, or observed through red or green tinted glasses. This allows the spectator to choose which definition he prefers to look at. But even without glasses or lights this piece can is interesting to look at. It forces the observer to look closely and filter out the different layers which is easy in some examples, harder in others. The Typeface I chose for this poster was Rockwell Extra Bold, a slightly forgotten typeface which is perfect for display rather than long bodies of text. For this piece it was more than suitable since i was searching for a heavy bodied type that had a lot of space to fill. The various brands and their own typefaces offer an interesting contrast to this blocky lettering.
